Have you looked at your windows recently and thought they needed a change? Blinds and shades abound in different style, colors, materials, and beyond. Are you not sure where to start? That is understandable; the choices are so many that the decision can feel overwhelming for some. There are a few basic things you want to understand in order to get started.
Blinds vs. Shades
Blinds and shades differ in a few areas. The primary difference is that blinds are made of a system of horizontal slats, while shades are typically made of a single piece of fabric or other flexible material. Both can be adjusted, though to different degrees.
Blinds offer more options in terms of light. You can adjust them so that just a little light seep through between the slats, or more so that they’re almost entirely open. You can angle the light up or down. You can have full shade with miniscule light, or lift them entirely for open windows. Blinds are great if you want all of these light options for the room.
Shades are great if you rely more on keeping the sun out entirely, or letting it all in. You can lift the shades in increments, too, and you can make things as light, or as dark as you need with thicker, or thinner material. Shades are great for rooms that get a lot of sun and need extra protection, or extra privacy. They can also help you save on energy bills.
Every person is different; there is no one right choice for everyone. If you view all of the blinds’ adjustments as a hassle, shades may be for you. If you want complete darkness, thick shades might be right for your windows. Or, you may want certain materials, looks, and feels that are better for blinds. There are plenty of ways to go.
